In 2019, cruise lines will receive 24 new liners. I will tell you about ten of them that were commissioned in the first six months and are already making cruises.
Mein Schiff 2
In January, TUI Cruises received its new flagship – Mein Schiff 2. However, initially it was supposed to bear the index “8”, but during construction the owner of the ship gave it the designation “2”, and the “old” Mein Schiff 2 was renamed Mein Schiff Herz.
The new Mein Schiff 2 is the longest liner in the TUI Cruises fleet – 216 m. It is 20 m longer than its “brothers”. This allowed to accommodate an additional 180 cabins. The vessel is designed for 2,894 passengers, with 15 decks, a 25-meter swimming pool, 12 restaurants and 15 bars.
The first cruise took place in February. Until October, the liner operates cruises in the region of Portugal and the Canary Islands, and for the winter will leave for the Caribbean.
In February, the premium cruise operator Viking Cruises received the new Viking Jupiter, the sixth ship in the Viking Star project. The length of the ship is 227 m, it is designed for 930 passengers, at whose services there are 9 decks.
All cabins on the ship have balconies. Only two swimming pools can be distinguished from entertainment. One is heated with a glass sliding roof. By the way, in the evening this is a place for watching the stars, as well as watching “movies under the stars” on the big screen. The second pool, located aft, with an infinity effect: thanks to the glass wall, it visually continues into the sea.
There is also a planetarium on the liner. For the first time such a “trick” on Viking Cruises ships appeared at Viking Orion in 2018.
Until November, Viking Jupiter cruises in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, and in December will sail to the shores of South America.
In March in Southampton, MSC Cruises baptized its newest liner, MSC Bellissima. The construction of “The Most Beautiful” (as the name of the ship can be translated) cost the company almost $ 1 billion. Bellissima became the largest cruise liner built this year and the largest ship in Europe.
The length of the liner is 315 meters. It can accommodate about 5700 passengers and has 19 decks at its service.
A special feature of the liner is a covered promenade located on three decks, the ceiling of which is made in the form of a giant LED screen with an area of about 500 sq. m.
Another feature of the ship is the presence of a voice assistant Zoe in each cabin. This voice-activated artificial intelligence in seven languages will be able to tell about what is happening on board.
The ship also has a 4D Cinema and Carousel Lounge, a huge area designed specifically for exclusive Cirque du Soleil shows (tickets for the show are not included in the cruise).
In March, in Trieste, the inauguration ceremony of the Costa Venezia liner of the Italian company Costa Cruises took place. The liner cost the owner almost $ 800 million.
The ship is 323 meters long, 80.5 meters high, 15 passenger decks, 20 restaurants and bars, two swimming pools and 2,116 cabins. The ship can simultaneously accommodate about 5200 passengers.
It so happened that I was one of the few Russian journalists who was invited to the inauguration ceremony. Therefore, you can read in detail about the new pride of Italian shipbuilders and see photos here:
Liner Costa Venezia: how the Italians built a new Venice by the sea
Costa Venezia was built specifically for the Chinese market, so the ship has already left Europe and is cruising from the port of Shanghai.
Expeditionary cruise ship World Explorer is the first ocean-going cruise ship of the Portuguese company Mystic Cruises. She received the ship in March.
From November to March, he will cruise in Antarctica. And the rest of the time – all over the world.
The length of the ship is 126 meters. It can take on board 200 people with 86 cabins (most of them with balconies).
In total, Mystic Cruises has ordered ten such ships. The next two will be delivered in 2020 (World Voyager) and 2021 (World Navigator).
In April, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises received the new Hanseatic Nature expedition ship. This is the first cruise ship to travel in the Arctic and Antarctic.
Length – 138 meters, capacity – 230 passengers, for whom 120 luxury cabins are intended. Nine decks. There are three restaurants on board, a spa and fitness center, and a sports water complex.
In the next two years, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises expects the arrival of two more liners, similar to Hanseatic Nature.
This cruise yacht from the French company Ponant entered service in April and became the third ship of this class. A total of six such liners have been ordered.
Designed for 184 passengers. The cost of cruises is not just high, but very high.
In July 2019, she cruises in the Aegean Sea to the islands of Greece.
Spectrum of the Seas
Royal Caribbean International received its first Quantum Ultra class cruise ship – Spectrum of the Seas – in May.
The length of the ship is 348 meters. 16 decks. It can accommodate about 4300 passengers.
The peculiarity of the liner is that from every cabin, even the inner one, you can see the sea. This opportunity appeared due to the “virtual balcony” technology, when a picture of the view overboard is projected on the screen.
Spectrum of the Seas has some of the most unique attractions in the sea. For example, Sky Pad: this is a trampoline that, thanks to virtual reality technology, transports the bouncing person to another place, time or to another planet. You can simulate jumping into the stratosphere.
But the main feature of the Quantum class liners is the North Star survey capsule. This is a platform with glass walls, which is suspended by a crane, and from where passengers can admire the views of the sea and the liner from a 90-meter height. The capsule moves and simultaneously rotates smoothly around its axis.
Spectrum of the Seas is built specifically for the Chinese market. Based in Shanghai and cruises to Japan.
This is the first hybrid expeditionary cruise ship of the Norwegian company Hurtigruten. According to the plan, the company was supposed to receive it back in 2018, but due to problems at the shipyard, construction was delayed for six months and the ship entered service only in May.
The ship was designed by Rolls-Royce. The liner is 140 meters long and is designed for 530 passengers. They offer restaurants, swimming pools, a fitness room and two restaurants.
Roald Amundsen cruises mainly along the coast of Norway. In October 2019, the liner will sail to the shores of South America – to Ecuador, Chile, Peru, and also Patagonia.
The new Celebrity Cruises liner was built specifically for cruises to the Galapagos Islands. Commissioned in May.
Its structure is designed in such a way that the liner can maintain position without the use of an anchor, which in turn allows preserving the delicate flora of the seabed.
The ship is designed for only 100 passengers.
