The cruise ship MSC Europa is the first in a series of four passenger liners of a completely new class – the MSC World Class, designed for MSC Cruises by the French shipyard STX. The launch of the first liner is scheduled for 2022, after which the next ship is planned to be launched in 2024. Two additional vessels (if ordered before 2022) will be launched in 2025 and 2026.

Few facts about MSC

MSC Cruises is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples. It was founded in 1960. Today MSC Cruises is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the world’s second largest transport holding company. MSC Cruises is the world’s largest private cruise line. In terms of annual passenger traffic, MSC Cruises ranks 4th in the world among the largest cruise companies (after Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines) with a global market share of more than 5%.

As of 2019, it is one of the largest European passenger shipping companies. May become the 3rd largest cruise company in the world by 2026 (potentially surpassing NCL in terms of total berthing capacity) with a fleet of 29 cruise ships, including 15 new ships (2017-2026) and an unprecedented budget of 13 billion US dollars for new shipbuilding projects.

The MSC World Class liners will have a maximum capacity of 6761. The cost of building one vessel is 1.125 billion euros. Shipbuilder – STX France. The shipbuilding order includes 2 original units, plus 2 additional units. Each vessel has a gross tonnage of 205,700 tons, a length of 333 meters, a width of 47 meters, and a height of 68 meters. The number of cabins is 2632.

It was originally planned that this vessel will have a maximum capacity of 6,850 passengers and will become the largest vessel in the world cruise fleet. However, something went wrong and MSC Cruises World Class liners were only second. They are surpassed by Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class ships with a maximum capacity of 6,370 passengers (plus 2,400 crew members).

Considering the design concepts currently available, we can suggest a structure similar to the Royal Caribbean ships: a promenade with cafes and bars; cabins with balcony overlooking the promenade and pool aft.

The main upper deck will feature a solar-powered retractable glass roof, a large resort-style pool, six jacuzzis, a children’s water park with a pool and 3 water slides. The two aft pools are intended to be an adult-only area.

In the bow there will traditionally be the MSC Yacht Club with its own pool, jacuzzi, relaxation bar

Among the key technical features of the MSC World Class liners are: new generation marine engines running on liquefied gas, new wastewater treatment plants, ultra-modern naval architecture of the liner with a Y-shaped superstructure (better panoramic views, significantly increased number of balcony cabins), G -shaped hull (vertically positioned / at an angle of 90 degrees, improving the hydrodynamics of the vessel / fuel efficiency).

In March 2019, Gianni Honorato (CEO of MSC) announced that MSC Europa would be shipped to the USA (Florida, Miami) for at least the first cruise season (winter 2022-2023).
